Community work at the Oxford Cycle Workshop
The Oxford Cycle Workshop is intended to a community resource rather than simply another bike shop. The key ways in which this is achieved are:
- Recycling bikes, making cheap bikes and parts available to people, whilst removing useful items from the waste stream.
- Teaching local people how to fix their own bikes, thus empowering them and making cycling a more attractive transport option.
- Working with young offenders - we've already helped around a dozen young people learn new skills and do something socially useful as part of the county's programme of 'restorative justice'. We have also done some work with other socially disadvantaged groups, such as the homeless, and we hope to do more of this in the future.
- Acting as a hub for cycling in Oxford, through our communication with our members and this website, we hope to promote and encourage all types of cycling and cycling facilities in the city.
